Intra-oral Examination Under Anesthesia

Abcessed Tooth Root in a Dog Undergoing Dental Surgery at the Animal Hospital of Ivy Square

A comprehensive intraoral examination is best performed under general anesthesia, after dental cleaning.

This always includes all intraoral soft tissue and bony structures, in addition to examination of the teeth and supporting structures.

It is often the case that periodontal (gum) disease is not evident until calculus and buildup has been completely removed during a dental cleaning.

Dental X Rays should be taken routinely to analyze the bony structures not visible at the intraoral examination.
